If you sleep on your back and liked the standard model, save the money; if you sleep on your side and found it too firm, this is the fix.
What the extra $160 buys
Two things, and it is worth being precise about which matters. The first is two additional inches of mattress, almost all of it comfort layer — this is the substantive change and it is what transforms the mattress for side sleepers. The second is copper infusion in the foam, marketed for cooling and antimicrobial properties. Copper does conduct heat better than plain foam, but in a mattress that already has a coil layer providing structural airflow, the marginal cooling benefit is small. Buy this for the comfort layer, not the copper.
How it changes the feel
The standard Allswell is medium-firm and support-forward; the Luxe lands at a true medium with noticeably more cushioning before you reach the coils. Shoulder and hip pressure that a side sleeper feels on the base model largely disappears here. Back sleepers still get adequate support because the coil unit is unchanged, but some will find the extra softness unnecessary — which is exactly why the standard model remains the better buy for them.
The competitive position
At $425 the Luxe leaves the pure budget tier and starts competing with the low end of the direct-to-consumer brands. The Luxe's argument against those is price and Walmart's return infrastructure, not materials — the foam and coil quality is a step below the DTC hybrids. Motion isolation improves over the standard Allswell because the thicker foam layer absorbs more movement before it reaches the coils — a real benefit for couples.
