A well-engineered, genuinely neutral mattress that has been overtaken on value. The zoned foam design is real and works, and the ability to test one in a retail store is worth something. But the Nectar offers a longer trial and a lifetime warranty for two hundred dollars less, and that comparison is hard to escape.
Zoned support, and whether it matters
Casper's design places firmer foam under the hips and softer foam under the shoulders within a single comfort layer. The intent is to hold the heaviest part of the body up while letting the shoulder sink, keeping the spine neutral. It works, and it is a more thoughtful design than the uniform foam slabs it competes against. The effect is subtler than the zoned coil systems used in hybrids like the Helix Midnight Luxe, because foam transitions more gradually than discrete coil zones, but it is a real feature rather than marketing.
The neutral feel
The Original does not have a signature. It is not the plush one, the firm one, the cool one, or the contouring one — it is the middling one, deliberately. For a mattress bought without testing, that is a defensible design goal: it is the option least likely to be actively wrong for any given sleeper. Combination sleepers do particularly well because the moderate response makes repositioning easy. Anyone with a strong preference in either direction will find it unremarkable.
Where competitors caught up
